Tips on How to Build a Model Rocket

  • Obtain a model rocket kit that matches your skill.  If you want to build an advanced kit, build one or two simpler kits first.

  • Read the model rocket directions completely before starting!  Also, have an adult read through the directions if they are helping you.

  • Use the correct glue.  Use yellow wood glue to attach all wood, paper, and cardboard parts together.  Use plastic cement to attach plastic parts together.  Rough up surfaces with sandpaper before applying glue.

  • After the fins are glued on, reinforce the fins with an extra bead of glue on each side at the joint - fins are the first thing to break off!

  • Attach the launch lug between the fins so the launch rod is not blocked.

  • Attach your shock cord far enough in so it is out of the way of the nose cone.

Tips for Flying a Model Rocket

  • Test the model rocket before launching. Tie a 4 ft string around the middle of the rocket (with engine in but not ignited) you should be able twirl the rocket around yourself in a circle and it should fly in a stable manner.  If it doesn't, fix the problem before launching it!

  • The nose cone and parachute should pop out easily. With the engine out, you should be able to blow the parachute and cone off easily by blowing through the bottom.

  • Keep the rocket parachute opened until launch time - it will open much easier.

  • Tilt the model rocket launch rod slightly into the wind when launching to compensate for wind drift.

  • Follow all safety precautions!  Model rocket engines are capable of causing serious burns and injuries!
